A "scholarly journal article" refers to an article that has been “peer-reviewed.” Peer review is a process in which other experts in a particular field or discipline review and evaluate the validity and quality of the research prior to publishing.
While the platforms and user interfaces vary depending on the database you are searching, all databases provide a way to filter your search results for "peer-reviewed" articles. There is often an option to check a box when searching for articles that are only peer-reviewed.
